Qualifying as a Solicitor - how does determination pay off?

Tue 3 July 2018

After completing the Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School, I joined the firm as a member of the post-completion team in the Conveyancing Department. Many of the students that I had studied with were struggling to get a ‘foot in the legal door’ so I was determined to make the most of the opportunity I had been given.

Working at Taylor Rose reinforced my ambitions to qualify as a solicitor and work as a professional providing a high standard of legal service to clients. I was resolute in my aim to secure one of the company’s training contracts and whilst working to achieve this, I was fortunate to have the support of my family, especially my Mum. In addition to the support of my family, I also had the support from my colleagues and managers who provided both encouragement and guidance. It was with their support that I quickly progressed from the post completion team, to the position of a conveyancing assistant and then onto the role of a fee earner. This was all within a relatively short space of time.

The training contract is the final step before qualification and it is a compulsory 2 year period of practical training in a law firm or other authorised organisation. The competition for training contracts is enormously high and the constant worry of failing to obtain a contract kept me motivated and focused to stand out from those who would also be applying. This meant that I would work late and put in extra hours when required.

In 2016, I was informed that I had successfully obtained a training contract with Taylor Rose which was to commence in January 2017. This was one of the best days (if not, the best day) of my life and my greatest achievement to date.

I am fortunate to have been supervised by experienced, legal experts as a trainee and I gained invaluable experience in different areas of law including commercial property, litigation and data protection. The work has been varied and rewarding and the best part was the amount of responsibility that each of the departments trusted me with. The last 18 months have flown by and I am now thrilled to re-join the Dispute Resolution Department (with whom I spent 7 months of my training contract) as a fully qualified solicitor.

It has been a long, challenging journey to qualify as a solicitor but every minute was worth the struggle and I am proud of my achievements. I feel very lucky. I love my job and I am very excited to embark on the next chapter of my dream career.

Taylor Rose will be offering training contracts for the January 2019 intake based in both our Peterborough and London offices. Training seats are available within the Residential Conveyancing, Commercial Conveyancing, Private Client, Company/Commercial and Litigation departments. Click here to view more.
