Peterborough's First Sensory Room Offically Opens
Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough is officially launching the region’s first purpose built sensory room in a shopping centre on Monday 14th May at 2pm.
Created to provide the parents of children with special needs and disabilities with a calm and peaceful sanctuary, the Little Miracles sensory room is free for shoppers to use seven days a week. The project, which started as a temporary pop-up last year, was proved so successful that it was agreed to make it an additional part of the shopping centre offering.
Taylor Rose TTKW, one of East Anglia’s leading legal firms, has given £10,000 in sponsorship to support the drop-in sensory room that is run by the charity Little Miracles, which helps families with children who have additional needs, disabilities and life-limiting conditions. Leeton Electrical also volunteered their services to help make the unit more suitable for its purpose, including by installing a disabled toilet complete with a hoist for wheelchair users.
The completed sensory room features a range of equipment, including LED optic fibres, a mobility hoist and soft play, together with activities that help children feel calmer and interact with others.
‘We’re very excited to have all four organisations working together to create the sensory room,’ says Michelle King, CEO of Little Miracles. ‘Without Queensgate we wouldn’t have a room at all. Without Taylor Rose TTKW we wouldn’t have been able to afford the equipment. And without Leetons we wouldn’t have been able to install the toilet. Together, these things will make a real difference for disabled people in Peterborough.’
Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre said: “The sensory room has proven to be a well needed service for our customers and it has my absolute support. It is more important than ever to ensure everyone feels welcome and comfortable when visiting Queensgate.”
