Gender has no relevance as everyone is treated the same says Partner Felicity Marsden

Felicity Marsden, Partner, Head of Property and Private Client heads up our Property and Private Client Department (Cumbria and Liverpool), where she is responsible for residential conveyancing, commercial, wills, probate and Lasting Power of Attorney. Here she talks about her lifelong interest in the law and becoming a Partner at Taylor Rose TTKW.

“I did work experience at a solicitor’s when I was 14 and really enjoyed the fast-paced environment. When choosing what to study at university, Law seemed a good fit for me personally and my aspirations for a career choice.

“However prior to going to University, I decided to take a year out and went to work at a small high street firm of solicitors to see if I did actually want a career in law. I learnt so much and found it fascinating, especially dealing with so many different people, along with complex legal issues, which I helped unravel to achieve the best outcomes for the clients.

“I found it suited me and decided this was going to be my career. I went on to attend the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. Qualifying as a solicitor is still my single most proud moment.

“The changes I’ve seen in my profession, particularly In conveyancing, is that women now seem to be outnumbering men and that more and more women are moving into the high powered jobs as heads of department.

“I have been lucky enough not to experience gender imbalance in the workplace, although I have come across some (acting on the other side) who seemed to think it was ok to be rude to me simply because I am a woman. I took the view not to let it bother me.

“When it comes to women who have stood for gender equality, I think Margaret Thatcher, our first female Prime Minister is a good example. She stood her ground and even if you did not agree with her politics, you could not argue with the strides she made for women.

“To make a difference to gender balance in my own workplace, I ensure gender has no relevance. Everyone is treated exactly the same and I stick to the advice my dad drummed into me as a child – to ‘treat others how you expect to be treated yourself."

“I have worked for Taylor Rose TTKW for almost five years now. They are a firm that is moving with the times, always looking for ways to improve and your opinion counts. Working here has opened up so many new avenues and exciting opportunities and being appointed recently has made me very proud.”

“My family is always my number one priority. Outside the office, I teach my daughter that she can achieve anything that she wants to and that her gender doesn’t prevent this. Sometimes juggling work/ life balance can be difficult, however, things are never as bad as they seem. Deal with problems head-on and embrace them, and see them as an opportunity to learn something new."
