Data Protection Bill to give more control over personal data

John Bryant John Bryant Partner

The government has announced that it will be introducing legislation to strengthen UK Data Protection law. The new Data Protection Bill will include provisions which give individuals more control over their personal data which is held by organisations with whom they deal.

These provisions will include, for example, the right to ask for personal data to be erased, the requirement for explicit consent when sensitive personal data is processed and a right for people to ask for data to be deleted.

The Bill will also bring the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) into UK Law. The GDPR itself includes provisions strengthening individuals’ rights regarding their data and will come into force in May 2018 (i.e. before Brexit), so that the Bill is also intended to help Britain to prepare for a successful Brexit.”
